Neurosurgeon Eben Alexander talks about his NDE while he had bacterial meningitis. The incredible rarity and severity of his illness, which wiped out not only his neocortex but brainstem as well, makes Dr. Alexander's experience a very strong case for the independence of consciousness from the physical structure and functioning of the brain.
